National Stage Combat Workshops

Introduction To Stage Combat

Students learn to perform fundamental techniques in the eight basic "fight" disciplines recognized by the SAFD. Each class emphasizes the development of the student’s personal command and understanding of their body in relation to theatrical physical conflict while encouraging each student’s personal development and artistic exploration.

The Introduction to Stage Combat Workshop will return in the summer of 2024.

The Stage Combat Intensive

This track is only open to folks who have previously tested in and passed Skills Proficiency Tests in all eight SAFD-recognized weapons styles. The first week of the Intensive, The Sandbox, has no testing component and focuses instead on allowing actors to hone their skills, push their physical limits, and work with other advanced students of the craft in a challenging technical environment. The second week of the Intensive, The SPR Series, offers the opportunity to take Skills Proficiency Renewals (SPRs) in all SAFD styles. The SPR Series is open to folks current in their weapon statuses, and also to folks who used to hold all eight certifications but have since lapsed. We welcome qualified individuals to attend one or both weeks, as their lives and schedules allow.

Participant Registration for the 2023 NSCW will open March 1st

Actor Combatant Workshop

This track focuses on training students in the compulsory techniques required for the SAFD Skills Proficiency Test (SPT) in Unarmed, Rapier Dagger, and Broadsword. Working in a studio format, students will explore character objectives and beat work within the fight, and are coached/rehearsed through their fight scenes. The track concludes in a presentation of the fight scenes for adjudication by SAFD Fight Masters.

Participant Registration for the 2023 NSCW will open March 1st

Advanced Actor Combatant Workshop

Open to Actor Combatants who already hold SPT certifications in Unarmed and at least two other disciplines, this track focuses on training students in the compulsory techniques required for the Skills Proficiency Test (SPT) in three additional disciplines (generally Sword and Shield, Smallsword, and Knife OR Sword and Shield, Single Sword, and Staff). This track also offers actors the opportunity to take masterclasses in multiple styles, to renew their statuses in Unarmed, Rapier & Dagger, and Broadsword, and to train in selected related topics such as Theatrical Firearms, or Consent and Intimacy.

Participant Registration for the 2023 NSCW will open March 1st

Teacher Certification Workshop

SAFD publicly endorses and certifies a safe and effective teacher of stage combat via a thorough examination of the candidate’s skills over a wide variety of techniques and abilities. Applicants must have thorough training in all eight weapons disciplines tested by the SAFD and must be able not only to perform the various techniques but demonstrate an understanding of the logic of the technique, its use, and how to teach it.

The Teacher Certification Workshop will return in the summer of 2024.
